The Gorilla Sports Weight Bench, Product Overview
When thinking about buying a home weight bench you need to take a few things into consideration.
First off what type of weight bench are you after? There are three general variations – the flat or adjustable weight bench, the barbell weight bench, and the multi-function weight bench, and you’ll want to pick the type that best supports your workout goals and needs whilst taking into account your budget and the space you have available at home. For more information on the type of weight benches available, I’ve put together a blog post: The Home Gym Weight Bench – Choosing the right option for you.
If you’re looking to extend your workout options beyond dumbbells and incorporate barbells into your routine then you’ll benefit from an adjustable barbell rack and so the Gorilla Sports Weight Bench could be the right fit for you. I’m going to be talking more about this bench in this review and why I think it’s one of the best barbell benches on the market – not just in terms of quality but in price too. After all, many of us are on a budget and looking to save money by binning off our gym membership and don’t want to be spending hundreds on our home gym set-ups.
As I’ve used this bench myself I’m going to walk you through some of my favourite aspects of it within this review.
A space-saving yet sturdy addition to any small home gym
The Gorilla Sports Weight Bench with adjustable barbell rack is a good fit for any home gym, especially if you’re pushed for space. The rack end of the bench hinges to a vertical position so it can fold and stack nicely against a wall – great if you don’t have a permanent space for it or need to clear it away to the side of the room to perform the rest of your workout. And you don’t need to worry about potentially pulling your back out moving it either – as at 40 pounds (18.5 kg) it’s light enough to move easily.
Not only do you save on space with this bench but it’s also incredibly well-made and sturdy – something you don’t always find with a foldable bench, or at least not one at this price. And judging by a lot of online reviews, I’m not the only one that thinks so.
Overview of the Gorilla Sports Weight Bench features
- Height adjustable barbell rack
- Padded bench that can be folded down
- Easy to fold for simple storage
- Load capacity 440 Ilbs (200 kg)
- Product dimensions: (LxWxH) 49.21 x 22.44 x 30.7 inches (125 x 57 x 99 cm)
- Weight 40 Ilbs (18.42 kg)
With a maximum load capacity of 440 Ilbs (200 kg) this is a good mid-range bench to suit the majority of people. As it’s a foldable bench and easy to store I assume this is why the max load capacity isn’t any higher, but for the price I wouldn’t expect it to be either. However just remember to take into consideration whether this max weight will be suitable for you when you’re working out as you’ll need to take into account your body weight + whatever you’re lifting, and that you have some room for manoeuvre. For instance a 200 Ilbs person benching 225 Ilbs will bring this pretty near to max capacity with not a lot of scope to increase the weight. This is really only a problem for heavier weight-lifters though and for the majority of people 440 Ilbs will be enough. If not though, and you’re on the heavier side or looking to seriously increase your benching weight, then perhaps another model may be better.
The Gorilla Sports Weight Bench is a pretty simple set-up and the adjustability comes from the barbell rack, as you’d expect. There are no bells and whistles here – the rack can be easily adjusted up or down by removing the two pins from either side and then fixed back into position. Perhaps not the quickest or most efficient way of adjusting up or down as the pins can be rather fiddly but I’ve come across worse ways to adjust a rack. In fact the sturdiness of the bench means it’s not rattling or shaking about as you’re trying to do it and you can get this done pretty quickly, so no game-changer here.
This is sometimes overlooked in reviews, but I think it’s important as I hate feeling uncomfortable and unsupported when I’m lifting which I find can affect the quality of my workout. The bench itself is fairly wide at 25cm (around 10 inches) and there’s at least 3cm (1.8 inches) of good padding underneath you to cushion you and the weight you’re lifting. Because it’s such a sturdy bench there’s no wobble either meaning you get comfort and reassurance that you’re well-supported at all times.
Should You Buy It?
If you’re looking for a really good quality weight bench with adjustable rack that’s not going to blow a hole in your pocket then the Gorilla Sports Weight Bench is certainly, in my opinion, one of the better ones. It’s sturdy and built to last and is perfect for small home gyms where space is at a premium.
The only slight negatives I mention relating to weight load capacity and being slightly fiddly when adjusting the barbell rack are quite picky really when balanced against what a generally good quality product this is. For the price, you’re getting a sound piece of home gym equipment that will be suitable for both beginners and veterans alike, providing excellent stability for any home workout.
