Although it’s extremely corny and far too ‘hyped’ for my liking, I thought it worth including the official Iron Gym advertisement here purely just to demonstrate how to use the bar and just some of the exercise options available*.

*Please note that despite what the advertisement says, you won’t get ripped just from using the Iron Gym workout bar alone, this will take time, commitment, dedication and a good nutrition plan.

Assembly and Installation


Easy to assemble, the pull-up bar requires only around 15 minutes to assemble, with installation taking as long as it takes you to lift it into place on the door frame.

There’s an optional safety clip that comes as part of the package that you can install above the door frame to secure the bar in place just in case you get a bit wild and start swinging about a bit. It’s a safe and secure bar if used correctly, but, depending on how narrow or wide your door frame is, you may want this extra safety precaution in place – so use your judgement, it’s there if you need it.

If in doubt – measure up first! Most doorways will support this bar more than adequately, but if you’re unsure then take a few measurements first, as it’s not adjustable. Ensure your doorway has the right dimensions and an adequate lip to accommodate it.

A Few Tips To Get The Most Out Of your Bar


Slow and steady

Make sure your exercises are slow and controlled in order to get the most out of them. This will also ensure the bar stays firmly in place and will prevent any damage to you or your surroundings! Don’t try anything new or flashy with it either – for this very reason. Stick to the prescribed exercises in good form and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how quickly and effectively you start to build up your strength.

Having trouble performing a full rep?

If you’ve not performed many pull-ups or chin-ups before it’s surprising at how little upper body strength you realise you actually have! Therefore, if you’re just starting out, trying to perform even one or two exercises can be challenging. Why not try the dead hang or negative pull-up using a box or raised platform first to help increase your strength?

When on the floor, try different variations of the push up

Really try making use of all the grips on the bar. If you want a little more tricep work then when using the bar to perform a push up, try using the rounded grips, bringing your arms in closer together and grabbing each handle so your palms are facing in towards each other. This will shift the focus slightly from your chest to involve your triceps, hitting them from a new angle and helping to ignite more strength and growth.

What I Really Like About The Iron Gym Total Body Workout Bar


A close up of a man using the Iron Gym Workout BarApart from what I’ve outlined above, one of my favourite features of the bar is the two extra hand bar/grips that extend out from the door meaning you can add in extra exercises such as the hammer grip pull, and really work your forearms as well.

There really isn’t a muscle in the entire upper body that will get off lightly with this piece of equipment. For the sheer amount of workout options it gives you alone, this is one highly effective and versatile piece of home gym kit that takes up minimal space and is so easy to store. A big plus here from me.

What I Think Could Be Improved


There are only a couple of small negatives here, which are more to do with the constraints of using a doorway at home to work out in rather than any design flaw with the bar itself.

If you’re particularly tall then a standard height doorway isn’t going to give you an awful lot of clearance before your feet touch the ground – so you’ll need to bend your legs as you lower yourself on the downwards portion of the rep.

When performing tricep dips using the bar on the floor, it’s also difficult to get very low before your butt touches the ground – you’ll still be able to hit the triceps but your range of movement is slightly reduced. To get around this however, you could try raising the bar off the ground slightly by using a couple of books or a small box.

A man using the Iron Gym Workout Bar on the floorThere’s a good reason why many personal trainers recommend having a pull-up bar as a must-have piece of equipment for training the upper body, and as far as adapting this popular bit of gym kit for the home goes, the Iron Gym workout bar doesn’t disappoint.

This is a highly functional, simple yet very effective piece of equipment that, for the sheer amount of workout options it gives you, is pretty inexpensive and worth the investment. It’s compact and easy to stow away, it fits most door frames and it’s built to last – using good quality materials which makes it solid and sturdy.

If you’re looking for a space-saving piece of equipment to add to your home gym that will give you a multitude of workout options without the need to head to the gym, then I’d recommend giving the Iron Gym workout bar a try. It’s a really core piece of equipment that anyone serious about strengthening their upper body should have in their arsenal.
